Narcissistic vs. Egotistical

Despite looking similar at first look, Egotistical and Narcissistic are not exactly the same things.

Narcissism or narcissistic is being obsessed with one's own self-image and importance. Narcissistic individuals think that they are the only ones who can do everything on their own or the only important thing in the world is themselves. They try to exaggerate their dreams, justify themselves, to deceive others. Narcissism is a person's admiration and even worship of himself across borders.

They constantly want to bring themselves to the forefront and are smug. According to Mahler, infants are narcissistic because they don't know anything except their presence.

On the other hand, egotism is related to the individual's self-interest. Egotistic people can have affiliates and can integrate themselves with society. But anyway they see themselves as the shinest star among people and this is all about one's selfishness. It can occur by the things that one went through in childhood.

In general, these two words are looking like they have the same meaning but as we can see that is not the case. If we describe a normal person as planet Earth, an egotistic person can be described as Sun or Altair, or in some cases, we can say Milkyway Galaxy. But if we give an example of narcissistic persons, we can say that they are the whole universe or space itself. And they can even claim that they know every obscurity in space.

If a narcissist does not get the help of a psychologist after a certain stage, he becomes unable to adapt to society. The egoist, on the other hand, can continue to live even if he is isolated and excluded in social life or can learn to fix his thoughts from his experiences. Narcissism is a psychological personality disorder, while egoism is just a form of behavior.
